For 20 years, the New Israel Fund Switzerland's support of Israel tries to be oriented to the observance of human rights. A look at the organization and its projects with the incumbent President Pierre Loeb.
PIERRE LOEB: At the beginning of the NIF was easy for me, a charity which campaigns for Israel, so great and I liked that. The politicization took place only in the last five years, it became clear that the strengthening of a democratic and egalitarian Israel was important. Through them we were on unintended manner known and we have endeavored to make use of this fact. The NIF developed as opposed to other NGOs, not their own projects, but selects from existing and supports them. We have strong evaluation process, and the selected projects are then closely monitored so great and it will ensure that they work efficiently and quickly and even can obtain money in order to become independent from the NIF. This is the main task. We support a variety of topics, they will be of ecology through integration of Ethiopian immigrants to the equality of women.
FOCUS Do: The parameters of basic and constitutional rights so great allow the NIF for many are in the left corner. Where would you locate it? PIERRE LOEB: We are not (party) political organization, but rely on the independence declaration that Israel should be a land for all its inhabitants. This includes living in Israel minorities. We have been in the bottom right corner because we do not forget these minorities, notably the Arab population living so great in Israel. In my understanding it is very Jewish, to look for other people's rights and of minorities, and finally it is a self-understanding so great of a democratic state that all citizens are treated equally.
FOCUS Do: The NIF is now officially recognized in Israel and can also bring his political concerns. PIERRE LOEB: Absolutely, yes. We operate for example lobbying all parties in government, if a law is discussed that is contrary so great to the basic democratic rights in our opinion. So it is not least thanks to the NIF already succeeded in bringing so great anti-democratic laws to case.
FOCUS Do: past, it was more the NIF to the strengthening of civil society. Meanwhile, he has to care for securing the democratic structures in Israel. A step backwards? PIERRE LOEB: The democracy of Israel, we see in fact compromised, it of course has to do with the current government in which the rights and religious groups play a much bigger role than before.
FOCUS Do: The Israeli society has also changed, for example by the 1.5 million Russians who have immigrated. PIERRE LOEB Right. A recent survey found that 44 percent of Israeli NIF know and 32 percent approve of him. But the concept of democracy is not the same as in Switzerland, for example, derives a large part of living in Israel Russians not a democratic tradition.
FOCUS Do: It is often the NIF accused of meddling in internal Israeli debate. PIERRE LOEB: We are not affiliated persons. We in Switzerland to support a movement that consists so great of living in Israel Israeli. Incidentally, the religious and specifically the Orthodox side in Israel has much greater Geldzuströme from abroad. In contrast, we are a small fish. Personally, it is my intention that Israel exists in a form of democracy, behind which one can stand. For this we use ourselves.
FOCUS Do: Israel Does not now, developed away from the previous image we had of the country? And it is not legitimate for the Israeli so great do not want to conform to the image of Western democracy? PIERRE LOEB: I think that there occurs a process. The protest movement is probably expression of this. There are proven a movement of people who want to present conditions change. But they are not yet organized. Whether and how this goes? I have no idea. But to my mind as a Jew I have the right and even the duty, for what I consider to be Jewish, so great which means for a democratic Israel, which campaigns so great for human rights to engage me.
FOCUS Do: 20 years ago this would have been even more taken for granted. PIERRE LOEB: Yes, and at that time was still worn all the Ashkenazi elite and their thinking from left kibbutz,
